Writing Instructor (part-time or full-time)

TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: Acting Academic Dean

MAJOR PURPOSE: The Writing Instructor develops and leads a robust academic support program for HTC and HIU students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develops a course(s)/workshops that helps students: 
    • Learn the basic elements of academic writing.
    • Deepen the connection between writing and thinking.
    • Learn the necessary skills to effectively develop ideas and argument in academic writing.
    • Prepare for the variety of writing that they will encounter in the course of their program.
  • Helps students develop writing skills needed to be effective in academia.
  • Provides academic support for students, including individual advising.
  • Coordinates with the Director of HTC and the Acting Academic Dean on programming that best serves the needs of a diverse student body.

Other Duties as Assigned
As is expected of all employees, provides backup support for the University’s major events/general activities, as needed.

There is flexibility for this position to be part-time or full-time.

QUALIFICATIONS/ REQUIREMENTS: Experience teaching composition or academic writing at the college or graduate level is strongly preferred. Candidates should have an ability to communicate effectively, to use technology and learning management systems (e.g. Canvas) effectively in teaching and learning, and to work collaboratively with faculty and other staff members. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in best practices in academic writing instruction. Librarian skills are a plus. Ability to work on Saturdays as needed.
