Jawad Anwar Qureshi

Biography

Jawad Anwar Qureshi is Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at Hartford International University for Religion and Peace (HIU), where he is also Co-Director of the Duncan Black Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. He received his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from The University of Chicago Divinity School and is the recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright Program as well as Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Award. 

Before joining HIU, Dr. Qureshi was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies. He previously taught at Zaytuna College, where he also served as director of graduate studies. 

His article, “Ring Composition in Surat Yusuf (Q. 12),” won the first Annual Andrew Rippin Best Paper Prize with the International Qur’anic Studies Association and was published in the Journal of the International Qur’anic Studies Association. He has published chapters in the Wiley Blackwell Concise Companion to the Hadith, Routledge Handbook of Sufism, Early Modern Trends in Islamic Theology, State and Islam in Baathist Syria, encyclopedia entries in The Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Politicsand The Encyclopedia of Islam and Law, and articles for the public in Sightings. He has presented his work at several leading national and international conferences and has conducted research in Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, and Syria. His forthcoming monograph is titled, Custodian of Sunni Islam: Ethics, Tradition, and Politics in the Life and Thought of Saʿid Ramadan al-Buti (1929-2013). He is also completing a translation of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī’s The Censure of Fame and Hypocritical Ostentation: Book 28 of Iḥyā’ ‘ulūm al-dīn, The Revival of the Religious Sciences (The Fons Vitae al-Ghazali Series).
