Open Positions:
Community Service and Literacy
Major Purpose: Find a position to fulfill the Literacy and Community Service as required by the Federal Work Study program. Student should work with the Office of Financial Aid to find a suitable off-site placement.
Requirements: Students may find qualifying placements such as working in community service jobs, including: reading tutors for preschool age or elementary school children; mathematics tutors for students enrolled in elementary school through ninth grade; literacy tutors in a family literacy project performing family literacy activities; or emergency preparedness and response.

Resident Assistant (RA)
Major Purpose: The RA assists in the acclimation of incoming residential students and visiting scholars to the campus, campus housing, and neighborhood. The RA serves as a liaison between residential students and Student Services Coordinator re: student concerns and engages actively in encouraging participation in campus activities and programs. The RA responds to on-campus student emergencies.
Requirements: Positive interpersonal manner to interact with HIU students, staff and constituencies. Ability to work with a diverse group of students. Must be an HIU student in good standing. Driver’s license and a car preferred. Must be able to work some hours in the evening and on weekends as needed. Familiarity with the Hartford area a plus. Working cell phone with US number necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• On-call: Serves as a “subject to call” resource for on-campus student emergencies. RA will be on-call for a set number of days each month. When appropriate, the RA refers student housing emergencies to appropriate HIU staff.
• Check-in: Works with the Student Services Coordinator to orient newly arrived students and visiting scholars on campus to let them into their assigned housing and provide them with keys and basic information.
• Schedules and facilitates house meetings at regular intervals to hear student issues and concerns; reports to Student Services Coordinator on a bi-monthly basis.
• Monitors new students on an informal social basis during their stay in HIU housing and works with the Student Services Coordinator on ongoing student community life.
• Serves as a guide for HIU buildings and makes introductions to key personnel.
• Makes introductions to other HIU faculty, staff, and students, when possible (individually and as a group), on an informal, continuing basis.
• Provides students with information about local events and lectures, places of interest and arts/theater.
• Attends activities as required by the Student Services Coordinator (for example—Convocation, Orientation, and group excursions).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to travel by bus and car to join students for outings; ability to speak clearly to communicate with students, faculty, and community members.
