Setting the Standard for the Field: Christian-Muslim Relations - A Bibliographical History

December 4, 2025
from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Dr. David Thomas, Emeritus Professor of Christianity and Islam, University of Birmingham, UK, and Dr. John Chessworth, Research Officer, will speak with HIU's Dr. David D. Grafton on the completion of a 17-year international research project on Christian-Muslim Relations (CMR).

Christian-Muslim Relations: A Bibliographical History originated at the University of Birmingham, England. It is an encyclopedic compilation of the records of past encounters in a single history that brings together the known writings by Christians and Muslims about one another and against one another from 600-1914.

The research project brought together hundreds of international scholars to compile records of all correspondence, between, on, or about Muslims and Christians in hundreds of different languages. The research project began in 2008 and concludes this year with 25 volumes and thousands of entries. CMR600 covered the years from 600-1500 and CMR1900 covered the years from 1500-1914. The 25 volumes are published by Brill press and are available online as well.

“The CMR is a massive international research project that will serve as the standard for research in the field of Muslim-Christian dialogue and relations for the next generation. It is an amazing resource that current researchers or students can find records and descriptions of Muslim views of Christians and vice versa,” said Dr. Grafton, Director of the Macdonald Center and a member of the editorial team of the CMR1900. “What is exciting about this project is that it is not only being used by academic scholars, but has been used by secondary schools as part of their curriculum in learning about religion and culture.”

This free online webinar will focus on "Setting the Standard for the Field: Christian-Muslim Relations - A Bibliographical History."
