Community Mourns the Passing of Wayne G. Rollins
January 5, 2026
The HIU community mourns the passing of Wane G. Rollins, 96, who taught at Hartford Seminary for many years, starting in 1966.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Wayne earned a B.A. in philosophy at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, and a B.D., M.A., and Ph.D. at Yale University in the field of Biblical studies.
Wayne and his family, including his wife Donnalou and their three sons, moved to West Hartford when Wayne became Professor of New Testament Studies at what was then called the Hartford Seminary Foundation.
An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, Wayne went on to work at Assumption College, and held visiting lecturer appointments at Yale University, College of the Holy Cross, Mount Holyoke, and Colgate-Rochester Divinity School. In his retirement, he continued to teach scripture at Hartford Seminary until fairly recently.
“The thing I remember about Wayne Rollins was his ability to connect with students," said Dr. David D. Grafton. "During my time as Dean, he taught a course in biblical studies every other year. Students would often tell me how he provided new insights into the study of scripture that they never considered before. He was such a gentle, caring teacher.”
Wayne was the author of many articles and eight books. He was the subject of a festschrift honoring his work called "Psychological Hermeneutics for Biblical Themes and Text."
Wayne was also a member of Asylum Hill Congregational church in Hartford. His obituary described him as living "with a zest for life, welcoming acceptance of everyone in his circle, and deep love for his family and friends." For his full obituary, visit this link.
A Memorial Service celebrating Wayne’s life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Avenue, Hartford. Livestreaming will be available at www.ahcc.org. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
