July 23, 2025

Syracuse University has named alum Imam Amir Durić '19 as the new assistant dean for religious and spiritual life at Hendricks Chapel. Durić, who has served as the Muslim chaplain at Hendricks Chapel since 2017, will now take on a broader leadership role, advancing interfaith engagement, spiritual wellness, and ethical development across the university community.
Rev. Brian Konkol, vice president and dean of Hendricks Chapel, praised Durić’s contributions for a Syracuse University article, stating, “Over the past eight years Imam Durić has repeatedly proven himself as an outstanding interfaith leader, he has earned the respect of our campus community, and through this new role he will continue to ensure we at Syracuse University prepare our students for participation in a changing global society.”
As reported in the article, since arriving at Syracuse, Durić has expanded Muslim student life, establishing the first Muslim Student Life endowment and increasing student participation by 500% through innovative programs and outreach. He also co-founded the Jewish-Muslim Dialogue Fellowship in 2023 and was recently named an Interfaith America Innovation Fellow. His work was recognized at the 2023 One University Awards, and he received the 2024 Award for Excellence by an Organizational Advisor, and the 2025 CNY RISE Center’s Community Service Award.
Durić said he is honored to step into his new role at Hendricks Chapel, a place uniquely positioned to model cooperation across differences and help form interfaith leaders.
Rebecca Reed Kantrowitz, associate dean of Hendricks Chapel, echoed the sentiment, noting that Imam Durić embodies Hendricks Chapel’s core values of compassion and inclusivity. “We look forward to working with Imam Amir Durić in this new role,” she said.
Congratulations, Imam Amir Durić!
