Homer: In Search of the Sacred

Ed Duffy

Join us for an enriching exploration of Homer's Iliad as we journey through Book 1 together, meeting Thursdays from 10:00-11:00 AM. This informal continuing education seminar welcomes those with New Testament Greek backgrounds who are eager to expand into the distinctive grammar, vocabulary, and poetic language of Homeric Greek. Rather than focusing on assessments or formal assignments, our group takes turns reading aloud, translating and then meditating on the beautiful verse. We seek to discover traces of the sacred woven throughout Homer's epic masterpiece—examining how divine encounters, ritual language, and spiritual themes manifest in the ancient text. Whether you're curious about the linguistic evolution from Homeric to Koine Greek or drawn to explore the religious and cultural dimensions of this foundational work, this collaborative reading experience offers a supportive environment to deepen your appreciation for both the language and the profound themes that have captivated readers for millennia. (Spoiler alert -- this is an ongoing project, and is currently about halfway through Book 1. But remember: the epic frequently recapitulates as designated speakers take up the narrative and re-summarize what has been, and is, being said).

This group meets online from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on 2nd and 4th Thursdays. Payment of $200 for the academic year is accepted online via credit card after filling out the application below.
