Dr. Deena Grant Promoted to Full Professor of Jewish Studies

HIU is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Deena Grant to the rank of full professor, a result of her record of excellence in teaching, research, and service to the institution. Dr. Grant will continue to serve as Academic Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Dr. Grant’s promotion follows a review that highlighted her impact in the classroom. Colleagues praise her as “knowledgeable, clear, and engaging,” with a singular “knack for introducing and framing ideas beautifully.” 

Students have praised Dr. Grant’s ability to help students connect with subject matter that is (as one of them described it) “difficult, complicated, and just huge!” One student expressed amazement at the breadth of source material the class had been guided to consult. They have called her “an absolute gem” and noted that her demanding courses are consistently worthwhile.

An external evaluator further recognized her as “an accomplished teacher and master pedagogue of Bible criticism,” noting her unique ability to intrigue students through her perspective as an observant woman within the Modern Orthodox tradition.

While HIU’s standard for promotion calls for excellence in two of three domains: teaching, research, and administration, Dr. Grant has clearly excelled in all three.
